22nd Annual Art Ability Exhibition & Sale, Malvern, PA
Preview Reception: November 4, 2017
Public Exhibit: November 5, 2017 – January 28, 2018

On display in the corridors of Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, Art Ability features art and fine crafts by artists with physical, cognitive, hearing and visual impairments. The season kicks off with the opening night Preview Reception held at the hospital with proceeds benefitting Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital patient and community programs.

The exhibit is then open free to the public and enjoyed by more than 3,500 individuals annually, including the hospital’s patients, their families and friends, hospital staff and visitors—making it the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of its kind in the nation.

The annual, international juried Art Ability exhibition and sale is twelve-weeks in length. Participating artists express their creativity through painting, photography, sculpture, fiber arts, stained glass, jewelry and fine crafts. Through these creative modes of expression, artists are able to convey their talent, receive recognition for their work, and often also to further progress in recovering from a life-altering illness or injury.

A stringent, two-step jurying process ensures that Art Ability presents highly professional artwork, demonstrating the strength of artistic talent within the disabled community. The first step is led by the Art Ability Curator and includes reviewing the submitted images and choosing the artwork for the exhibition. The second step includes esteemed jurors who are selected based on their expertise and prominence in the fine arts community. They judge the work, selecting the pieces to receive awards in their respective categories.

2017 Judges

A.M. Weaver, Nancy Campbell, and Amie Potsic have been chosen as the judges for the 2017-18 Art Ability showcase at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital. A.M. Weaver is a curator and writer with an extensive background in the history of American contemporary art and culture. She has curated many assorted exhibitions, including those with internationally acclaimed artists. Nancy Campbell has been the Executive Director of the Wayne Art Center since 1987 and has an extensive background in art education, special education and arts administration.  Her thirty year contribution to the art center has created countless visual and performing arts programs along with critically acclaimed exhibitions. Finally, Amie Potsic, the Executive Director & Chief Curator of Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA, is an established photographer and installation artist who has exhibited her own artwork internationally. Along with being the Chair of the Art in City Hall Artistic Advisory Board to the Office of Arts and Culture of the City of Philadelphia, Potsic won Best in Show for her work on view at the Delaware Contemporary. These three prestigious women of the Philadelphia art community will evaluate an expected one thousand entries of art including paintings, photographs, sculptures, fiber arts, stained glass, jewelry and fine crafts. Prizes are awarded in each category of media. All three judges are committed to promoting a diverse range of artistic styles and mediums and are warmly welcomed by the Art Ability program and Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital.

2017 Artist Awards

Art Ability also offers over $7,000 in cash awards for works selected by a panel of esteemed judges.  We are able to award such generous prizes thanks to contributions from board and community members.  Each year we receive excited messages from our artists who have learned that their artwork has been awarded a prize.

“What a wonderful surprise and honor to receive this award from the Art Ability Exhibition for 2014.  It was truly unexpected and very much appreciated.  Being recognized in this way validates and legitimizes my passion for this art form of making beauty out of discarded materials.  Thank you very much, Karen.”
