Formerly a nurse and health care administrator, Graves is a self-taught and full-time artist who believes that art is a means to self-discovery. Hereditary deafness resulted in her increased ability to see more acutely in the visual world. She says her deafness gives her greater faith in nonverbal communication, because words sometimes fail to “express the emotion or beauty of a scene, and serve as poor substitutes for the strength of the visual.” Her disability has also allowed Graves to reflect on the perceptions in the world, and to gain full awareness of the nuances of human emotion. Graves uses watercolor in a contemporary style to portray detailed glimpses of life in various cultures. She displays her work in several group exhibitions throughout Kentucky, and has been a featured artist in both the Egg & I Gallery and The Antique Galleria, located in Paducah, Kentucky.
