Free’s journey with art began in grade 1 when he won 4th prize at the Edmonton Exhibition. Later, he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of Art at the University of Manitoba. As a student, he was diagnosed as schizoaffective and suffered mental breakdowns. Free views art as a legitimate and useful response to problems in the past. Although he does not regard his art as therapeutic in value, he considers it a blessing to use art to penetrate the mystery of his mental-illness and resolve the issues that surface from the depths of the unconscious. Free has had his art exhibited and recognized in a number of national and international shows, including Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital’s Art Ability Show and winning “Best Artist” in the “Mindscapes 1” show held in Ottawa.
